This Is Us season 2 episode 9 preview: How do Kate and Toby move forward?

After tonight’s emotional punch to the gut, This Is Us season 2 episode 9 is going to be a Kate-centric story where she will be picking up the pieces. The title here is “Number Two,” and that is only fitting given that this is Kate’s story. You will understand more of how she’s feeling in the present, but also some of what transpired with her in the past.

(Warning: SPOILERS ahead from tonight’s episode if you missed it.)

At the end of Tuesday’s “Number One” Kevin learned (through Randall) that Kate had lost her baby — with that, we’ll see if he decides to confide in Randall the truth about his addiction and what he’s going through. That may not happen in “Number Two” given that this is the story of how Kate and Toby handle the news, and what they each decide to do in order to move forward. We imagine that this story will cover some of what we missed for them leading up to the reveal tonight, and hopefully a little bit of the aftermath. It’s devastating; Kate knew that this was a high-risk pregnancy because of her age and her weight, but she was excited about it and she and Toby were starting to move forward into their next chapter as parents. Hopefully, they will get another chance; the thing with life is that nothing is meant to be easy, and we imagine that this is one of the themes that This Is Us is likely going for here. It’s been most of the Pearsons’ lives to date.

11/21/2017 (09:00PM – 10:01PM) (Tuesday) : Kate and Toby’s lives take an unexpected turn. Meanwhile, Rebecca encourages Kate’s singing aspirations.

While music is not going to take away the pain Kate is feeling, we do think that it may offer her a chance at healing and give herself a way to channel some of her pain. It’s also good to see that Rebecca is there to support her. She’s going to need to lean on people during this time and it’s already pretty clear that she’s not going to have Kevin.
