Madam Secretary season 4 episode 7 preview: Sara Ramirez makes her debut

A few days after the departure of Bebe Neuwirth, we knew that Madam Secretary would be adding a new person to the cast in Sara Ramirez. The former Grey’s Anatomy star would be a full-time cast member and someone who proves to be very useful to the entire State Department in Kat Sandoval.

Madam Secretary season 4 episode 7 is going to mark the character’s big debut, and judging from the synopsis CarterMatt has for you below, the show is throwing her right from the frying pan and into the fire:

“North to the Future” – When a Russian dissident flees to the U.S. after contracting smallpox, Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord and retired U.N. Ambassador Kat Sandoval (Sara Ramirez) must work with Russian Foreign Minister Konstantin Avdonin (Yasen Peyankov) to contain the outbreak, on MADAM SECRETARY, Sunday, Nov. 19(10:30-11:30 PM, ET/10:00-11:00 PM, PT) on the CBS Television Network.

There is not going to be much in the way of a cool-off period for this character as she has to figure out whether or not she will sink or swim in this world. We know that Kat’s got all of the skills necessary to be useful to Elizabeth and her team, but does she have the right chemistry with everyone? One of the most important things about working in this position is that you have to be capable of actually getting along and effectively communicating with the people around her. This is a challenge for Kat since she is coming in years into Elizabeth’s stint as Secretary of State. Everyone around her already has a history of working together and as a result of that she needs to find a way to fit in with people who already know each other quite well.

As for the story itself, who would’ve thought that we would be talking about a story featuring smallpox in 2017? Typically these days when you think about political storylines and Russia, shows are going in a very different direction. It’s probably a good thing that the show isn’t going in that direction — this is a pretty nonpartisan show despite the subject matter and we don’t think anyone wants to have to sift through divisive Twitter comments and infighting from people who are watching the show.
