Our Girl season 4: Will it happen on BBC One after tonight’s finale?

Our Girl season 4

Following tonight’s finale on BBC One, is there a chance for an Our Girl season 4 coming up in the future?

For the time being, there is a reason to have hope to get more of the British military/medical drama in the near future. One of the biggest reasons for optimism merely starts in the ratings. While season 3 is not averaging the same numbers as season 2, it is pulling viewership in the 4 million / 5 million range week in and week out. This is comparable to the first season and that’s a solid rating for a BBC show. It’s also somewhat of a self-starter — it doesn’t necessarily generate a heck of a lot of promotion, but it does still find a way to perform fairly well and generate interest for itself.

Also, we do still consider Michelle Keegan to be somewhat of a rising star. If there is one person who is going to be able to generate a little more viewership for this show over time based on name value, it’s probably going to be her.

Hopefully, you won’t have to wait all that long to figure out one way or another if an Our Girl season 4 is going to happen. The BBC sometimes announces renewals at the end of their previous finales; other times, they choose to make the announcement a couple of weeks after the finale wraps. Technically, though, they don’t have any obligation to make an immediate announcement one way or another as to a show’s future. The reality is that they could just shelve a show for a while and come back to it down the road when they’ve either got a good story or a need for more. Things operate a little bit different for shows in the UK — sometimes there are many years between seasons of a show. Sherlock and Luther are the two shows that are most commonly used as a reference.

Beyond network decisions and timing, one of the biggest reasons to renew Our Girl is simply that there aren’t too many shows out there quite like it when it comes to showing a female medic out in the field.
