Supergirl season 3 spoilers: Laurie Metcalf to play Winn’s mother

Winn's mother

Supergirl season 3 is getting set to finally introduce Winn’s mother, and we personally couldn’t be happier about it.

If you are a frequent CarterMatt reader, you know one thing about us already — we’ve had a desire to get more of the Winn character on the show for a long time. Jeremy Jordan is a great actor, and while we do think that the writers have done some good stuff with him, there is room for more. Did you know that it’s been two years since Henry Czerny made his last appearance on the show as his father a.k.a. Toyman? That’s a long time to wait. (There was actually a point in the early days of the show when we feared that Winn was actually going to become that character a la Caitlin Snow becoming Killer Frost on The Flash — luckily, those days seem to be done.)

According to a new report from Vanity Fair, it is going to be none other than Laurie Metcalf who is playing the character of Winn’s mother, and the story behind this is actually rather sweet. Apparently, one of Metcalf’s youngest children is a huge fan of Supergirl star Melissa Benoist and this role was a way for her to be a little bit closer to the show and this DC Comics world. This helps to inform the casting a little bit. Metcalf is a big name for a CW show! She’s best known these days for being Sheldon’s mother on The Big Bang Theory but she also was spectacular on the short-lived Getting On. It’s probably just as much of a thrill for Metcalf to be on this show for her family’s sake as it is for the cast to have her around to impart some of her wisdom.

Another bit of fun trivia with Metcalf, for those unaware, is that her daughter Zoe Perry is playing the younger version of her Big Bang Theory Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon.

Based on the timing of this Supergirl casting news, it is fair to assume that Winn’s mother is surfacing in the back half of the season, starting in January at the earliest. This gives the character his meatiest arc of the season — last season, he had the romantic subplot with Lyra that unfortunately doesn’t seem to be resurfacing this go around.
