Quick Hits: MacGyver season 2, The Good Doctor, STAR season 2 castings

MacGyver season 2

For today’s edition of our CarterMatt TV Quick Hits we’re talking castings — so let’s dive in right away with something from MacGyver season 2!

In a post on Twitter, former High School Musical star Ashley Tisdale confirmed that she will be joining Lucas Till and Justin Hires for an upcoming episode of the CBS series. Given this show we figure that her part will be something fun and action-packed, even if there are no confirmed details as of yet.

Tisdale is the second high-profile addition to the show over the past week; we recently reported that Bruce McGill, (who played the character of Jack Dalton on the original version of MacGyver) is going to be coming back for a different role now. (Read a little bit more on this here.)

Some of Tisdale’s other recent credits include Hellcats, Young & Hungry, and Clipped. She’s also become a rather prolific voice actor over the years.

As for some other notable castings…

The Good Doctor lands Eric Winter – The former Witches of East End star is going to recur on the ABC breakout show, (as per Deadline) as a young and “charming” doctor named Matt Coyle. On the surface he’s going to appear as though he’s accomplished and is a great addition to the team. However, over time everyone may uncover that there is a little bit more going on here than what they were aware of on the surface. He may end up actually making some of his other co-workers uncomfortable — this could mean many different things, but it should make for an interesting story for us to watch.

STAR season 2 scores two big additions – In a press release on Thursday, the Fox series confirmed that “Grammy Award-winning artists Patti LaBelle and Brandy Norwood will guest-star in multi-episode arcs … beginning this spring on FOX. LaBelle will play Carlotta Brown’s (Queen Latifah) tough but loving mother, Christine; and Norwood will play Carlotta’s younger sister, Cassie.”

These castings seem to be accomplishing many different goals at the same time. First, you’re getting a chance to have some more Carlotta backstory on the show. Beyond that, you’re also casting some industry icons to hopefully bring more attention to the show. This is certainly something that Empire, (another show in this universe) does very well already.
