Apple picks up Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon’s ‘morning show’ drama series

Jennifer Aniston

Look out world because Apple has now entered the scripted drama series arena.

According to Deadline, Apple has picked the a new series executive produced and starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. The new series was given a straight-to-series order and will give an “inside look at the lives of the people who help America wake up in the morning, exploring the unique challenges faced by the women (and men) who carry out this daily televised ritual.”

The new drama will mark Aniston’s return to television after her role on the Emmy-winning series Friends. For Witherspoon, it will be a follow-up to the successful Emmy-winning limited series Big Little Lies. Aniston is set to executive produce through her Echo Films company and Witherspoon through her production company called Hello Sunshine. Also executive producing is Michael Ellenberg, the founder of Media Res. However, Aniston and Witherspoon will have ownership of the series. The drama will have a 10 episode order for each season.

For viewers, this is definitely a show we are keeping an eye out for. First off, Aniston is a comedy and drama queen, with Friends being the start of a very successful comedy career that morphed into movies. She also starred in Cake, which gained her acclaim from critics for her dramatic role. So if fans are going to watch a new show, we suggest anything by Aniston. Also, the teaming up with Witherspoon is an even better reason to watch this drama.

Witherspoon may have just ended her first season on Big Little Lies with a second installment (likely) on the way, so she’s definitely a force to be reckoned with in the scripted drama arena. Once again, this team equals a success and we can see why Apple was so eager to pick this drama up.

For its part, it appears Apple is modeling itself similar to Netflix. By this, we mean Apple will employ a straight-to-series orders and premiums over cost, which vary from show to show.

Overall, Apple picked up what has the potential to be a winner. The idea of the series is very unique and something that hasn’t been done. Sure there have been movies that showcase the behind the scenes of morning shows, but a television series has so much potential for great storytelling.
