Grey’s Anatomy season 14 spoilers: EP sets up Matthew Morrison’s return

Matthew Morrison’s return to Grey’s Anatomy season 14 is certainly not a secret — the actor himself announced it weeks ago. However, it was this past episode that the seeds started to be planted where we could see him appear on the show. Jo decided that she wanted to make some movement forward in the divorce and with that, it seems that Paul Stadler will have to be a part of the story in order to complete it.

Speaking to TVLine at the recent 300th episode party, show co-showrunner Krista Vernoff confirmed Morrison’s return by saying that the goal here is to face “the issue of domestic violence head-on.” With that being said, there are zero plans for Grey’s Anatomy to divert itself away from the “lighter tone” that they have professed is coming in various interviews leading up to the season:

“I’ve talked a lot about how this season [we’re refocusing the show on] fun and joy and laughter, and my commitment has been to make sure there’s laughter in every episode — even the ones where the stories that we’re telling are quite painful and quite dark … And my hope is that women will come out of this story feeling empowered. I’m really proud of this story. I’m really proud of the work that we’re doing.”

CarterMatt is hoping that these comments mean a happy ending is coming for Jo as a result of this, though we do still have some questions. For example, will Paul see Alex somewhere along the way and realize that he’s seen him somewhere before? Also, if Paul was stalking her and abusive to her before, are there better tools in place to protect her now? We do hope that there is, because we want to see her and Alex happy — they’ve gone through more than almost any other couple on this show and deserve some moments where they can celebrate each other as opposed to having to constantly look over their shoulder wondering if terrible surprise is going to be coming their way.

If there is one good thing that comes out of Matthew Morrison being back on Grey’s Anatomy, it’s this: The potential for more great Camilla Luddington and Justin Chambers performances.
