American Idol 16 premiere date revealed on ABC

American Idol 16 premiere date

There is no longer any reason to wonder what the American Idol 16 premiere date is going to be. Early Monday morning, ABC officially confirmed it and now we can all start marking days off our calendar until it’s return.

The singing competition will be coming back (for the first time in two years) on Sunday, March 11 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern. The timing of this premiere date is what many people speculated in advance, and it makes sense given that ABC clearly wants to avoid the deluge of competition that is going to be present in the first eight or nine weeks in the new year. This puts them past the Super Bowl, the Grammys, and the Oscars; by the time the new American Idol starts, it can do so without facing any other sort of substantial competition other than programs on some other networks.

The new American Idol will once again feature Ryan Seacrest as the show’s host, but almost everything else about it will be different from what the show was in the past. Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan are the new judges, and the show will likely have many tweaks to its format to make it work with a new viewing audience in mind.

Personally, CarterMatt is almost wondering if American Idol would be better off if the show just cast twelve or so singers and just skyrocket to the live shows — do these for two months so you actually get to know some of the singers and really get the viewing public involved with them. The audition process just feels outdated at this point and we all know that it plays out in reality very differently from what we see on TV.

Hey, as long as the show’s entertaining, we probably shouldn’t care all that much about the format or anything else. This is just what we have the most doubts over given that save for some occasional Harry Connick Jr. moments the final two seasons of American Idol on Fox left something to be desired. There also hasn’t been a winner of the show since Scotty McCreery who made any substantial impact in the music industry. You have to go back further to Kris Allen to find someone who had a major hit on the pop charts.

What do you think about the new American Idol 16 premiere date?
