Real Housewives of Atlanta premiere: Porsha Williams’ hug-gate
There is no better example of this than at the gala near the end of the episode, which featured some serious controversy over Porsha Williams hugging people … seriously. Also, who’s a good friend versus who is a bad friend. NeNe Leakes returned to the as a full-time cast member, and with that there was drama aplenty between the two ladies stemming from some of her comments on Watch What Happens Live! about Porsha being “just as guilty” as Phaedra Parks. Remember Phaedra? Her ghost was haunting the episode in a big way. While technically we didn’t see a clip with NeNe saying that she wanted Porsha fired, you can take from her comments whatever you want. The implication could be there if you really wanted to hear things that way … which, for the record, Porsha really wanted to hear it that way. It’s so much easier on this show the majority of the time to feel as though someone is out to get out than it is to take any accountability yourself — really, there’s probably some blame to go around.
For a second here, let’s circle back to what we consider to be one of the central themes of the entire Real Housewives franchise — listening to people so desperate to be right that they’re willing to shout at each other repeatedly to get their point across.
To think, all of this started to come out in the midst of Cynthia Bailey trying to have a birthday celebration. Note to Cynthia — if you want to have a serious, happy birthday celebration, we seriously recommend not doing it on this show. There are very few ways in which this is going to work out well for you.
If you love RHOA, there’s a good chance that you enjoyed the premiere; if you were on the fence about last season, we have a hard time thinking that anything in here changed your mind at all.
