Game of Thrones season 8: Why Maisie Williams is ready to move on

When you listen to many Game of Thrones actors discussing the end of the HBO series, they are all grateful for the experience. Yet, you simultaneously also get the sense that many of them are ready to move along to the next big thing in their life. Being a part of this show effectively gives the cast an opportunity to make many of their other dreams come true. Studios around the world realize that there are huge financial incentives that come with working with this cast — people know who they are, and as a result of that there are reasons why they would want to bring them on board some of their projects.

With Maisie Williams, both making and appearing in independent films really does seem to be a good fit for her. In a new interview with the BBC she noted that this is one of the things that she’s wanted to do more than any other, and she wants for people to know that she can do a wide array of different things:

“I’m really excited for Game of Thrones to finish and there’s going to be time for me to do whatever I want … That’s just incredibly exciting and it will be nice to pick roles that I want to do.

“I can show the world what sort of actress I want to be and shape my career a little bit.”

Williams does have The New Mutants coming up, which is hardly an independent film, but will show audiences more of what she is capable of. Beyond Game of Thrones we would say that one of her most notable roles has been as the impossible-to-spell Ashildr on Doctor Who.

In general, the results for Game of Thrones cast members in other projects has been mixed at best. While Kit Harington does seem to have some success going right now with Gunpowder, at the same time some of his movies have been commercial disappointments. Meanwhile, the attempt to reboot the Terminator franchise with Emilia Clarke did not work altogether well, though she does have a role coming up in the upcoming Star Wars Han Solo project. (Gwendoline Christie is also within that film franchise following her The Force Awakens appearance.)
