When the first season was airing, CarterMatt wasn’t altogether sure that a Big Little Lies season 2 would be even a faint possibility. However, at this point it seems as though it’s something that could actually happen. While nothing is concrete at the moment, the interest seems to be there for everyone involved and it’s mostly a matter of checking off all of the necessary boxes.
The biggest one that is going to be a hassle here is probably scheduling, and that is something that writer David E. Kelley confirmed with the following comment per TVLine:
“We’re kicking around ideas and trying to lasso the talent [and] get the band back together … It’s just a lot of logistical things. But I’m optimistic because everyone wants to do it. We feel we still have storytelling to do. No decision has been made yet, but we’re hopeful. Where we left it, I felt like it did open the opportunity for a lot more storytelling.”
Big Little Lies season 2, (if it happens) is probably years out so there is plenty of time to figure all of this out. Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, and many other people within the cast all have busy film careers and a lot of different things going on. Somehow, though, we imagine that they will figure out a way to make it happen since this show has a lot of positive attention.
Should they make more?
Let’s just say this — the bravest thing in the world is knowing when to walk away so we hope that all parties involved do that if they go through the process of exploring a second season and realize that there is no way to make the story as good as it was the first time around.
There’s no reason for a Big Little Lies season 2. None. The show told a great story the first season and now we can move forward. The only reason to continue the show is because people loved it — but if you really love it, sometimes you have to realize that getting more of it may destroy the magic. It’s like eating a really great slice of cheesecake and then thinking that you needed to eat three more slices after the fact. Then you just feel sick and the memory of the first one’s not as good anymore. That’s the cheesecake analogy, folks — consider that, David E. Kelley and company. (Don’t we all want cheesecake now?)
