The Orville season 2 renewal official; Seth MacFarlane series gets more episodes

The Orville

It looks like it’s all systems are a go for The Orville season 2. Fox announced on Thursday that the Seth MacFarlane space dramedy is coming back for another batch of episode set to air in 2018.

This news was confirmed by Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn, who said the following in a statement:

“Once again Seth has struck a powerful chord with viewers … He has delivered a series full of optimism, drama and his trademark humor. We want to thank him and the rest of the talented cast, as well as the producers and crew, for an incredible first season. We can’t wait to see where The Orville travels in the second.”

So why renew The Orville for season 2 so early? One of the big reasons for that simply has to do with getting the episodes ready within plenty of time. This is not your ordinary show that can turn a story around in just a few short weeks. Instead, we’re talking about a high-concept space show with wide array of special effects including some CGI work for some of the characters. It’s a very big production and it takes a lot of time to get together; luckily, it’s also one that is endlessly entertaining and one of the pleasant surprises of the fall season.

One of the things that we were worried about going into the show was that Fox’s marketing was a little bit sketchy in promoting what The Orville actually is as a series. While it is silly and has a fair share of funny comedic moments, there’s something about it that is also sweet and really celebrates some of the nostalgia of the genre. It is reminiscent of the old Star Trek series in that it focuses on some space exploration while introducing new characters and worlds on a weekly basis. MacFarlane clearly has a love for this sort of television and it shows through almost everything that he put out there in this series.

For the time being The Orville season 2 does not have a specific episode order. CarterMatt is hoping that it will be for at least 13 episode (similar to season 1), but Fox will take a look at the ratings at the end of this season and determine how many they want to make based on that. The show got off to an extremely strong start thanks to NFL football earlier in the fall, but it has declined significantly since the move to Thursday night. It is generating good DVR numbers and has a very devoted following, especially considering that this is a very new and sometimes it takes time to build an audience.
