Is a Shameless Season 9 possible on Showtime?

Is it really possible that we could see a Shameless season 9 renewal coming to Showtime in the near future? We know that it is something that we would love to see happen here at CarterMatt. As for whether or not it could actually happen is something else entirely.

For example, it doesn’t look like Showtime is in any hurry to announce that season 8 is the final season. More often than not, the network has chosen to end some of their great shows around this time. Take, for example, Dexter which ran for eight seasons, and while there were some talks about bringing it back for a season 9, it just didn’t happen. Meanwhile, Weeds only lasted until season 8 as well, and it looks as though Homeland could end at around the same time.

Is there more life in Shameless beyond eight seasons? It seems like there will be, mostly because this is a family ensemble show. The Gallagher family craziness shouldn’t be coming to an end unless something really crazy and catastrophic happens. If that does happen we’re going to go ahead and blame Frank for it because that just seems to be the right thing to do. Frank makes everything burn (metaphorically) to the ground, so why not this?

One of the larger questions beyond the story is whether or not the cast would want to keep going? For now, it does appear that they still enjoy the gig; it’s fun, it’s over-the-top, and Shameless allows the actors the chance to do crazy things that they probably would not get to do on other shows. Also, it does have a good schedule compared to other shows out there. You only have to work a handful of months out of the year and you’ve got a substantial amount of time to pursue other things — at least compared to a 22-24 episode network show.

We wonder if one other thing Showtime could consider is renewing Shameless and then reducing the episode order to around 8-10 episodes every year? That would give the cast more time to do other things and keep this engine chugging along for a little while longer. We do think the network benefits greatly from the show and doesn’t have any other shows quite like it! Showtime needs some comedic programming and this series has shown its ability to perform well no matter where it is plugged into the year.
