Chicago Fire season 6: Jesse Spencer on Casey’s promotion, relationship with Dawson

Jesse Spencer

With Chicago Fire season 6 airing its fall finale on Thursday night, doesn’t now seem like the right time to touch on Casey and Dawson? The two are of course happily married and continuing to do their best at work, but they are in the midst of some pretty significant changes. After all, Casey was just promoted to Captain, and the change in rank and leadership can cause problems. It could give Casey a different mindset on the job, and in turn a different mindset at home if he cannot take off that Captain hat and some of the responsibilities that go along with it.

So will there be any tension that comes with Casey and Dawson as a result of the promotion? It doesn’t seem like it’s going to affect them too much (at least for now), judging from what Jesse Spencer told CarterMatt during our recent One Chicago Day set visit:

“[It’s not impacting their relationship] as much as I thought. Maybe it will come up later. He’s in a position of more authority at work, but I think he’s become pretty good at wearing different hats. So when they are husband and wife, they can put on their husband and wife hats. When they’re at work, they can put on their captain and paramedic hat. It’s not that much different from being a lieutenant — there’s probably a lot more paperwork.

“There is more tension that is going to come with Severide, but there’s always been a natural sort of tension there since they lost a friend of theirs back in the pilot. There’s going to be more with Severide than there’s going to be with Dawson — I think with Dawson it’s going to be more about family stuff and her father that creates some natural tension between them.”

On the Chicago Fire fall finale (you can check out a promo for that here) you will see Casey and Severide at odds over the handling of an incident, one that could threaten to completely derail the entire relationship that the two of them have. It’s an episode you are going to want to watch live, given that there are some big revelations at the end of the episode that will get you very excited about the return of the show down the road. Few shows know how to create a great cliffhanger tease quite like Chicago Fire does!

As for during the episode itself, be prepared for a good bit more drama when it comes to the character of Hope;. Meanwhile, there will be some comedy coming your way courtesy of the Truck crew and one of the larger stories for Otis that we’ve seen this season.
