Gotham season 4 spoilers: Peyton List replaces Maggie Geha as Poison Ivy
Earlier this week, Frequency / Mad Men alum Peyton List was confirmed to be the new iteration of the well-known villain from the Batman DC Comics universe. She is someone who really does not need much of an introduction given that the vast majority of people know her already. What’s a little more unusual is what the Fox series is doing with the character. Remember that in terms of Ivy Pepper’s actual age she is still a fairly young girl in a grown up body. Clare Foley played the original version of the character, only to be replaced by Maggie Geha (pictured above) as the older iteration of Ivy for a solid year or so. Now, List is coming on board.
In terms of how the story set up for this change, during her last appearance on the show Geha’s Ivy took a wide array of different tonics in hopes of enhancing and strengthening her powers. She started to change, and hasn’t been seen on the show ever since. In a statement, the producers indicate that this new iteration will likely feel more like the Poison Ivy Batman fans know and love:
“In the continuing evolution of Poison Ivy’s origin story, Ivy Pepper has been transformed once again taking another step toward becoming the Ivy we know from the comics … Dangerous. A live wire of crazy energy. She’ll set her sights on Gotham, intent on making the city her own green paradise.”
List will make her first appearance on Gotham in the new year, hopefully before season 4 comes to a close. Given the show’s recent ratings it seems like a questionable move holding out for a possible season 5 introduction to her character.
This isn’t the first time that List has taking on a character within the DC universe. In the past she played Lisa Snart a.k.a. the Golden Glider in a series of appearances on The Flash. Since that time, the show oddly acts as though she never existed given that her character, (and Cisco Ramon’s crush on her) are rarely ever referenced.
What does Maggie Geha think of the changes?
She responded in a post on Twitter this week, giving some love to List and also referencing what Foley said when she first departed the role. List has yet to publicly comment on the casting.
We’ll give Gotham a little bit of a chance to justify the change, though the whole struggle with the Ivy character in general is that she’s consistently been very different from the comic character, perhaps more so than almost any other villain on the show. We do understand the need to play fast and loose with the source material to suit the narrative, but this change is especially surprising since they already had an adult Ivy in Geha’s iteration.
