John Bell teases Outlander season 3 episode 8 – ‘First Wife’ story

John Bell

Outlander season 3 episode 8 (entitled “First Wife”) is coming up on Sunday, and based on what John Bell had to say in a new Twitter Q&A session, we could be in for a rather bumpy ride. It’ll be dramatic and highly engaging for us as viewers, but painful and quite possibly traumatic for some of our favorite characters.

This is the interesting dichotomy when it comes to Outlander: The harder things become for Jamie and Claire, arguably the better they become for us watching the show and for Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe in terms of material to play.

There is a tremendous amount of content coming up, and that includes many big secrets being revealed — there is obviously the truth about Jamie’s other marriage that will be coming out. Given that these characters are heading back to Lallybroch the odds are high that some more secrets will in turn be revealed.

Beyond that, there is one other interesting development to consider: Young Ian’s absence from his family home and Jamie’s dishonesty as to where he’s been. Don’t you think that this could come up and cause additional tension? If we were Ian’s parents we’d be certainly upset when the truth came out — sooner or later, it feels like it has to.

The man behind Young Ian (John Bell) took part in a Twitter Q&A session today, and within that he offered up a cryptic, but appropriate tease for what is coming in this upcoming episode:

As many out there likely know at this point, CarterMatt has said that we feel “First Wife” will be an acting tour de force for Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan. They’ve gone through the joyous part of their reunion; now, it is time to unleash some of the pain.

How much does John Bell know in advance?

Young Ian obviously has a large role coming up on the show and with season 4 now filming he’s well aware of what most of that story will be.

Nonetheless, don’t just assume that this means that Bell knows the entire path for the character. He made it clear in another post that he doesn’t want to “read too far ahead” in the Diana Gabaldon series. That makes some sense given that many actors do like to be in the moment with their characters as they can live within their character’s mind as much as they can. Sometimes that is harder when you are telegraphing many moves ahead. That’s clearly not something that Young Ian is doing!

The best part about filming Outlander season 4? We have to figure that Rollo is pretty high on the list.
