Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Floods, Roy Moore, Australia, and Robert Mueller

Roy Moore

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver returned after a one-week hiatus, and it seems like in that time Oliver has been largely building up his strength to deliver what was a heck of a knockout tonight — and not just about one single subject.

Here are some of the moments that may have had you in stitches — and also probably afraid. This show excels at balancing out the two.

Robert Mueller – At the start of the episode we were reminded that someone could be arrested on Monday after some charges were filed on Friday. We’ll just have to see who that is in due time.

Roy Moore – Well, Oliver had a field day with the Senate candidate from Alabama, and for good reason. Why isn’t there more press being given to some of his views? There are extreme viewpoints, and then there are some of this guy’s viewpoints on the LGBTQ community and other matters. The idea of him being elected is … well, Oliver summed that up better than we ever could. Also, this part of the show included a riff on Ray Donovan, which we feel is in one way shade since the show airs on Showtime rather than HBO.

Australia – Who knew that the country was so backwards when it comes to same-sex marriage? This segment included the mockery of many actual Australians and … Macklemore? Apparently not everyone there is supportive of him performing at one of their biggest sporting events because of his hit song “Same Love.”

Floods – This was the main segment on the show tonight, and it actually started rather deep into the show. Yes, floods happen — the segment wasn’t about that. It also wasn’t about global warming and global warming only. Instead, it was about some of what America has done to prevent flooding and what they’re forgetting to do. Also, the show touched on insurance, the government, and how outdated many policies are at the moment.

Was this the flashiest main segment ever? Hardly. It’s almost like actual floods — nobody pays attention until they’re happening. It’s probably one of the most important segments that Oliver has done all year, but it won’t get the attention of some of his other recent segments. It wasn’t altogether hilarious … but not all of them can be. This was a little more about facts, disturbing profits, and what can be done.
