Madam Secretary season 3 episode 5 preview: Ambassador problems

When Madam Secretary season 3 episode 5 airs on CBS next week, you better be prepared to see Elizabeth McCord facing some new issues. Tea Leoni’s character is in a little bit of a vicious cycle when it comes to some of her work as Secretary of State. She takes two steps forward, and then someone makes the end goal further way so she has to take two more steps to catch up to where she was. Everything for her is more challenging than it needs to be.

On Madam Secretary season 3 episode 5, much of this struggle will present itself in the form of Elizabeth doing everything that she can to make a human trafficking conference happen. This is the sort of thing that should be easy to pull off — doesn’t everyone want to stop human trafficking? Unfortunately, the actions of someone within the American government will make things far more complicated than they need to be.

“Persona Non Grata” – Elizabeth is determined to continue to hold a human trafficking conference in Kyrgyzstan despite the inappropriate actions by a U.S. ambassador. Also, Elizabeth and Henry worry about Alison when she keeps coming home from college, on MADAM SECRETARY, Sunday, Nov. 5 (10:30-11:30 PM, ET/10:00-11:00 PM, PT) on the CBS Television Network.

What is going on with Alison? It could be one of many things and for the McCords, the best thing that they can do is be present. Alison is old enough that she knows she can come to them, but they need to be ready to engage with her when she is. This is another ongoing struggle-of-sorts with this series: Obviously Elizabeth wants to be there for her daughter and so does Henry; they just have to balance that with the billion other things on their plate. It’s not always easy to be family-focused on the other side of the world.

To make matters worse, Elizabeth is still trying to adjust to life without Nadine Tolliver as a part of the team. That struggle will last for a while since she was an important part of the team (and the show). Eventually she will get some help in the form of Sara Ramirez’s arrival.
