The Scorpion season 5 renewal battle should start now

If you’re looking to see a Scorpion season 5 renewal happen on CBS, CarterMatt has a message to pass along: The time is now!

In this day and age when you love a TV series, you have to be aware of what the ratings are early and often in the event that you want to see it brought back for another season. With Scorpion in particular we really do think that there isn’t a whole lot of time to sit around waiting/hoping that CBS is going to decide to make a renewal move with it. The longer that you wait, after all, and the less likely it is that you can mobilize a movement in order to get another season in time. Networks need to know how you feel about your favorite show.

If there is a clear advantage for Scorpion at the moment, it’s this: Timing. The timing couldn’t be better to get the campaign off the ground. If you start the movement early to get people watching live, there may be enough time to get some more people on board — based on what we’re seeing in terms of the numbers right now it’s pretty clear that this show does need all of the viewership that it can get. So far, season 4 is down around 30% in the 18-49 demographic versus season 3, and there really shouldn’t be all that great of a reason to have numbers fall that much. It’s in the same timeslot, still has a great cast and good stories, and we don’t think that it necessarily had that better of a lead-in last year.

What’s the real difference year to year? The only thing that we can really think of here is that for most of last season, Scorpion had the benefit of not airing against The Good Doctor, which has been the breakout hit of the fall and seems to be charting towards getting a season 2 renewal by the Christmas holiday. It’s good that show is a hit (since we do have a soft spot for Freddie Highmore), but we don’t think its success has to be the failure of Scorpion. As it is, we’re worried about Scorpion getting another season — at least on Monday night — if the ratings continue to be what they are. We’d suggest that if you love the show, make sure that you’re watching live! If you’re not doing that, watch the show through a platform like DVR, on CBS All Access, or just CBS’ website in order to make sure there is some monetization kicking back to the network. Talk about the show online and get other people hooked on it.

The good thing about Scorpion is that we don’t think you really need to watch most of the past seasons in order to understand what’s going on. The story of this show is well thought out so new viewers can pick it up and watch it without any problem at all.
