Madam Secretary sneak peeks for ‘Shutdown’; no staff, new challenges

Madam Secretary season 4

With basically no staff to support her and especially no Chief of Staff, it appears as though Elizabeth is going to be in a complicated situation on this week’s upcoming episode of Madam Secretary.

CBS has released three sneak peeks to give fans a hint at what is to come.

First sneak peek – The promo showed the lighter side of the episode with Elizabeth, Henry, and their son, Jason, sharing a nice family moment. Jason is doing a school report on the CIA and asks Elizabeth if she can help without overstepping her authority. She surprisingly agrees and we see that it makes Jason happy that she would want to help him. We got the impression when Jason asked that he didn’t think she would because she may not be able to answer his questions or even want to talk about the CIA. It was an interesting moment to see Jason, in a way, drop his normal sarcastic attitude and politely agree that it would be great.

The same thing happened again when Henry offered to meet Jason at the spy museum and once again Jason was taken off guard by Henry’s interest in his project. However, he was happy that both of his parents didn’t give him a hard time. We saw a different side of Jason and it was great to see.

Second sneak peek – The second promo quickly told us how life is without a staff. It appears as though the only staff member still around is Blake, her personal assistant. When she first sees him, Blake hands her Chief of Staff resumes to which Elizabeth says that Blake has the skills to do the job. However, Blake says that after filling in for Nadine for a bit, he doesn’t want the job.

The brief moment was a moment that had one purpose; to eliminate Blake as a candidate. It’s a smart move by the writers because many fans believe that Blake would be a good choice. However, this scene confirms that the writers have a choice in mind, but are slowly eliminating potential candidates fans believe the new Chief of Staff could be.

Third sneak peek –  This preview gave a look into the after effects of the shutdown. Russell comes to the State Department demanding that Elizabeth give a press conference commenting on how the shutdown has affect the American people. She doesn’t want to, but Russell basically tells her she doesn’t have choice. She reluctantly agrees, however, with the shutdown everyone is doing their job and everyone else’s.

In the beginning of the promo, Russell also briefly mentions the issue of the week. Although we didn’t fully understand the issue, he mentions they are going to launch a full on front assault. However, the videodidn’t give much context as to what they were discussing.

Overall, Madam Secretary is doing exactly what we had hoped. The series is finding realistic ways to keep the audience coming back each week with its new and fresh storylines. While some are moving faster than others, we said this season is living up to our expectations so far.
