Madam Secretary: More reaction to Bebe Neuwirth’s unexpected exit from the show

Bebe Neuwirth

It was the slow build up Sunday night on Madam Secretary that left fans hoping that Elizabeth’s Chief of Staff, Nadine, played by Bebe Neuwirth wouldn’t leave the series.

The episode started for Nadine with finding out that she was going to be a grandmother when her estranged son, Roman, called to tell her the news. However, he also called because Roman and his girlfriend are moving to the Bay Area to raise the child, but she was mistakingly taken for someone else on the no fly list. So he asks his mother for her help, which Nadine agrees to.

After succeeding in helping her son, Nadine realizes that she wants to spend more time with Roman after he invites her to join them in the Bay Area. The request touches Nadine more than her son realizes because after being estranged for so long it seems like they are finally finding their way back to each other. Nadine ends up telling Elizabeth she is leaving permanently.

The moment between Nadine and Elizabeth is one of the most touching moments of series. Elizabeth was understanding of Nadine’s decision to go, but you could tell she was heartbroken to lose not only her reliable Chief of Staff, but also a friend. In a way, you could also see Téa Leoni saying goodbye to a friend as well. The moment brought closure for the character and was a believable and rational exit for well-liked character.

While we don’t know the exact reason why Neuwirth wanted to leave, she did tweet from her Twitter account that she was grateful for the cast and crew and for CBS in accepting her request to depart from the show. The good news for fans is that she chose to leave and wasn’t force to. Many times when an actor or actress leaves a show, it’s because the network and/or creator wants to write them off for creative or financial reasons. So it’s nice to see that this was not the case for Bebe Neuwirth.

Whatever the reason may be, we want to wish Bebe Neuwirth good luck in her next adventure and project and we wish her success. From us and the fans we want to also thank her for portraying a character we grew to love and we enjoyed following her story.
