Supergirl season 3: Preparing for Floriana Lima’s departure

Floriana Lima's departure

It may not be the easiest thing to digest, but the fact remains the same: Floriana Lima’s departure from Supergirl seems to be coming soon. It’s not much of a surprise that, for one reason or another, Maggie will need to be written out. Lima opted to pursue other opportunities and as a result of that, she’s not going to be a regular this season. It may only be a matter of episodes before the character leaves — whether or not it’s permanent remains to be seen, but we could be seeing the beginnings of what could lead to a breakup between the two.

What could be one of the biggest reasons for a possible split? Well on the show much of that has to do with Alex wanting children. For the time being she seems to be accepting of the fact that Maggie doesn’t want any, but over the course of the season that could change. As a matter of fact, we have a feeling that it will change given that we don’t think that Alex is going to be willing to agree to this when it’s something that she really doesn’t want.

No matter the reason for Maggie leaving the Supergirl world, Chyler Leigh is making it clear that it leaves a deep emotional impact on her. In speaking on that subject to Entertainment Weekly she passed along the following message:

“It strikes a chord very deep within me, and hits me very personally, because I love the story line, I love the relationship … There’s a lot of technicalities that come into play. There’s only so much you can do when it comes to people’s decisions, whosever it is.”

The one bit of good news that we can offer to you is that Lima also told EW in an interview posted earlier today that she isn’t closing the door to returning in the future:

“Yes, definitely [I am open to returning] … I love this story, I love the cast and the show. Chyler and I have a really strong bond. I’m so glad that she was the person in the role, because her and I connected really well, we understood what we wanted to accomplish as people for the role, and we felt very responsible for this story, so I love that Chyler was just as game as I was in trying to make this a meaningful, progressive and hopefully in the smallest way possible — or the grandest way possible — somewhat change the world a little bit.”

This is probably going to be the hardest part about seeing Sanvers split up for many out there — this was a relationship that meant a lot for them. With that, it’s something that Supergirl has to be very careful about in the weeks to come.

How do you think that Floriana Lima’s departure will be handled on Supergirl?
