NCIS season 15 episode 5: The surprising struggle of Clayton Reeves

Clayton Reeves

When NCIS season 15 episode 5 airs on CBS Tuesday night, Clayton Reeves will be at the center of it — with a surprising reveal.

While we certainly knew that there would be more to this character, played fantastically by Duane Henry, than what initially met the eye, learning that he has a history of addiction is something unexpected. He seems on the surface to have it so together — he is brilliant as an agent within the NCIS, and with that it’s understandable that you would want to create some sort of perfect tableau as to who he is in your mind.

Yet, that’s not exactly the case as this episode will reveal. Clayton has many of the same struggles and problems as just about everyone else, with one of the biggest ones being that he is an alcoholic who is recovering through AA. How this gets revealed in this episode is that a friend of his gets kidnapped — but because he knows the victim through AA meetings, he gets put in a very difficult spot in terms of what he can say.

In previewing this episode more to TVLine, Henry notes that the story “reveals a lot of things about Clayton and his character, and his demons … [through this], I hope that it sparks a few brains of people who go through similar issues. It’s fun [to explore it] for the character, but the bigger issue and the message within are very important.”

The thing to remember here is that no matter what Clayton Reeves or any other character on NCIS ultimately goes through, this is a show that is setting out, by and large, to make you feel good about its main characters. We feel like the writers are going to fashion Reeves in this episode as an inspirational figure who is conquering his demons and trying to be better in his life. If there ever are problems that he faces in the future, we do hope that he can find a way to tell some of his fellow characters. In doing so, maybe in the process he will have an opportunity to share a little bit more in regards to information about himself and also offer more support in the event that something happens with him in the future.

We also hope here at CarterMatt that this story yields some chances to see more of Henry in the future. NCIS seems to be working him in a way right now where he is contracted to a certain number of episodes a season; he is considered a regular, but is not a part of the show all of the time.
