Saturday Night Live – David S. Pumpkins sketch almost had Lady Gaga

David S. Pumpkins

We all have many questions related to the famed Saturday Night Live character David S. Pumpkins; unfortunately, we still don’t have answers. That’s intentional, given that the whole game of this sketch from last year is that nobody really understands what the point of him is. (Personally, our feeling was that he was put into the haunted elevator to lure patrons into such a false sense of security that when it happens, nobody expects it and it freaks everyone out like nobody’s business.

One piece of information that we have today that we absolutely never expected to know was that at one point, Lady Gaga was also set to be a part of the sketch. She was serving as the musical guest alongside Tom Hanks for this episode, and there was consideration for her being a part of it. (Hey, the skeletons famously said they were.)

In a new interview with Vulture, the sketch’s writers in Bobby Moynihan, Mikey Day, and Streeter Seidell all went into great detail discussion the creation of the sketch and some of what happened along the way. Originally, Gaga was going to be the one jumping out at Kate McKinnon and Beck Bennett from the elevator rather than David S. Pumpkins himself. Here’s what Day had to say about the idea:

“She’s wearing a jacket with witches on it. You think she’s gonna say “’Wanda Witches’ or something, but she goes, ‘I’m Mrs. David Pumpkins.’ Of course his wife would be weird.”

So why didn’t she end up appearing? It really had to do with time. Gaga was performing two new songs from her album “Joanne” and because her performances were so involved, she wanted to focus on that. Day said that she did like the sketch, but couldn’t figure out a way to do it and finish what needed to be done on her performances.

In the end, Gaga gave great performances but had she done this, it may have been her most memorable appearance in the show’s history even ahead of “Liquorville.” Of course, to be fair to Gaga, it’s hard to imagine anyone beforehand with this sketch thought it would be the success that it is. Since its inception we’ve seen Halloween costumes, parodies, and there is even a Halloween Special coming to NBC this weekend that will feature Mr. Pumpkins discovering the true meaning of Halloween.

If you need any further reminder here at CarterMatt of the sketch’s popularity, consider this: The original YouTube version has been watched more than nine million times.
