Ray Donovan season 6 renewal official (with New York City move)
Today, Showtime confirmed that they are bringing the drama series starring Liev Schreiber back for another batch of episodes, with a little bit of news that we did not see coming: The story will be shifting to New York City for the upcoming batch of episodes. This is the first time that a season of the show has shifted outside of Los Angeles, and that’s a huge deal given that the City of Angels has served as a character on the show in its own right — in some ways, it’s been the devil on Ray’s shoulder and in part one of the things that has caused him all sorts of pain and pleasure.
In a statement, showrunner David Hollander had the following to say about what he is looking forward to when it comes to the move:
“For our show, creatively, New York is exciting … Fashion, media, finance, theatre, culture. It’s going to present new challenges for Ray which means new opportunities for us as dramatists. Ray came to Los Angeles to build a life for himself and his family. They’re not there anymore. Ray’s career has changed and he is looking for a place to rebuild his life. Ray thinks he went to New York to help his daughter. He’s going to find out he’s there to help himself.”
Now that we’ve mapped much of this out, one of the other things that you probably should be prepared to see to go along with this move is that there could be some cast challenges. Maybe we’ll be surprised and the entirety of the core cast finds a way to get to the Big Apple, but for the time being that feels fairly unlikely. How in the world do you get everyone in the same place in order to make that happen? There could be some new players who come on board the show and this could bring a whole new sense of electricity and drive to the story.
What’s interesting about this news is mostly that we don’t foresee Ray Donovan as a show that was doing anything wrong when it was in Los Angeles this season; yet, in the efforts to mix things up the writers apparently want to stay ahead of the curve. We don’t think that it was necessarily needed but we definitely do applaud them for having the guts to do something like this before they necessarily have to.
For the record, the Ray Donovan finale airs on Showtime this weekend and if you head over here, you can see more of a preview for what’s coming up.
