Star Trek: Discovery season 2 renewal official at CBS All Access

Star Trek: Discovery season 2 renewal

Beam viewers up to cloud 9: CBS All Access has officially confirmed a Star Trek: Discovery season 2 renewal Monday morning.

Is this news a surprise? Hardly. The science fiction series has been in many ways the crown jewel of the CBS All Access lineup from the moment it was announced — they’ve invested an incredible amount of money and time into making this show a hit; while the network is not releasing viewership numbers, we do know that it has driven more subscribers to the platform in a month than any other show in their history. (Apparently, even more than Big Brother.) Even if the show wasn’t performing at expectation, we would still have anticipated a season renewal coming out for one reason more than any other: A desire to get the show more attention and see if its first season could accumulate more viewers over time. Maybe there are some out there who have been hesitant to watch the show until they get reports from other people. Or, maybe there are some out there who are waiting to get the service until the end of the season so they can just pay for one month and binge the whole thing.

Personally, we love the ambition and the thought process behind the show — we hate the foul language that shifts the show away somewhat from the safe-for-most original series and The Next Generation. To us the biggest value of this franchise is cultivating the imagination of young people to be inspired to think outside the box; the show shouldn’t be finding ways to limit that. (You can read more of what we have to say on this at CarterMatt over here.)

In a statement confirming the Star Trek: Discovery season 2 renewal, CBS Interactive president/COO Marc DeBevoise had the following to say:

“In just six episodes, Star Trek: Discovery has driven subscriber growth, critical acclaim and huge global fan interest for the first premium version of this great franchise. This series has a remarkable creative team and cast who have demonstrated their ability to carry on the Star Trek legacy. We are extremely proud of what they’ve accomplished and are thrilled to be bringing fans a second season of this tremendous series.”

The current run of Star Trek: Discovery episodes will continue from now until November 12; following that, the show will go on brief hiatus until early next year when the remaining batch of stories comes on the air. There is no premiere date or episode count for the new batch of episodes, but with the production already in place for the show we don’t anticipate anywhere near as many delays as we had going into the first season.
