Madam Secretary season 4 episode 4 preview: What’s next after Nadine shocker?

CBS hasn’t released much in the way of information as of yet about Madam Secretary season 4 episode 4; what we do know is that there’s trouble. All you need to do for evidence of that is look at the title for this upcoming hour: “Shutdown.” Government can work when government is up and running, but when it’s not you are effectively setting yourself up for disaster.

For Elizabeth McCord, there is a reasonably good chance that she is going to experience a sizable taste of that over the course of this episode. After all, how will she effectively cope with the fact that she is not able to do business in the way in which she wants? This is a disaster, and one that the government really should be doing everything that it can to prevent.

What makes this episode so interesting in theory is that it’s the producers tipping its cap in some ways to current events without getting overly political, which we know is something that Madam Secretary is by and large scared of doing for good reason. They don’t want to run the risk of doing anything that could alienate their audience and we absolutely understand that. Doing this finds a way to expose one of the great issues impacting the country at the moment — government inaction due to party differences — without having to pick sides across the board. It’s a smart, interesting idea, and probably one that the show should continue to explore for some time moving forward even if they resolve the shutdown in this episode.

Hopefully, CBS will reveal a little bit more as to what is coming up in the next several days (beyond the context that we got on the show tonight, which we’ll get to in just a minute) — they have not necessarily confirmed the shutdown story as of yet, but it is fairly easy to speculate about its existence when you get a chance to see titles like this coupled with where the show is in its story at the moment.

Well, we now know that Nadine is departing her post, which may be in part why CBS opted to not give away much information about this episode in advance. In between this and the shutdown, this is going to be a time of great uncertainty for the Secretary of State.

The promo below doesn’t really focus on Nadine’s exit; instead, it focuses on a major health crisis at the most inopportune time.
