Is Last Week Tonight with John Oliver new tonight? Joy in waiting
We wish we could say that there was a new episode — we really do. Thanks to everything that has happened over the past week (especially in terms of the Donald Trump Administration) Oliver has plenty of material that he could touch on and dive into. While we know that he can effectively dive into so many other issues that are out there, Oliver like so many other hosts at the moment realizes that this is his bread and butter. We’re living within a world that is hyper-political at the moment where many of these headlines are ultimately unavoidable. No matter where you turn, politics are all around you and you really just have to understand that.
Now, one of the other questions that you have to ponder here is fairly simple: Why in the world are we not getting a new episode this week? To quote Oliver and one of his famous rants, how is this normal? Well, one of the real reasons for it simply has to do with the fact that this is not a show that runs every week since here and there the writers and researchers need a little bit of a break.
On the surface, we understand what the optics of this may look like — “oh look, it’s some showbiz types being lazy.” However, remember that when there are new episodes on the air this is not a show that runs just four or five days a week. It’s a pretty around-the-clock job that requires long hours. Given that it airs on the weekend, you’re losing most of that in the process if you work for the show. It doesn’t operate using the typical 9-to-5 schedule by any means, and that’s why you get some of these long breaks.
Also, this is one of the reasons why the show is so in-depth and brilliant: It takes time to make good segments. If this show was every week or even multiple times a week, you wouldn’t have the same quality pieces without hiring a substantially larger number of people to help prepare them. There are probably some pieces in the works right now that you may not see for many more weeks — heck, it wouldn’t shock us if there are some you don’t see for more than a month.
Last Week Tonight will return next week; at least this isn’t a long hiatus this time around.
