Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Equifax, Harvey Weinstein, and healthcare

Equifax

Last week, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver became one of the first late-night shows to really take on the subject of Harvey Weinstein. Tonight, they started off the program with Oliver railing into not just Weinstein, but some of the people who callously chose to defend him right out of the gate — and for very little reason. They way in which some of these people treat Weinstein and the accusations against him remain appalling, but we are glad to see most of the late-night community speaking out again him.

With all of this being said, do you really need late-night television to tell you that it’s horrible? Sometimes you really shouldn’t joke about it at all because it’s horrible. Just ask James Corden about that at the moment.

Beyond just this opening, Oliver did go into some of the news of the week, including Donald Trump’s healthcare decision and his feelings about the Iran deal. Then, we had a segment all about Pumpkin Spice Latte (yep, that did happen) before getting into the main story of the night on Equifax.

Why talk about the credit-reporting company at this point? Well, much of that has to do with the recent hack that took place. Not only that, but also the handling of the incident by Equifax. They didn’t report the breach to the public for weeks, and to go along with that there was a wide array of other problems — including a multitude of credit reports being sent to the same address. This was bad. Really bad, given the information that is out there within your credit history.

Out of all of the segments that we know Oliver could’ve given to the public we know that Equifax is not going to be remembered as the most exciting one for many reasons. For one, it’s not altogether flashy since credit is not the sort of thing that people like to think about. Also, it’s rather faceless and it’s hard to mock a huge corporation for something. It’s much easier to do that to an individual when they’ve done something that makes them worthy of said mockery.

Aside from the Equifax piece we are very much pleased that Oliver continued with one of our favorite running jokes tonight: Trump doing something terrible, and them him making a signal that the national crisis was over and we could all breathe a little bit easier … even though that wasn’t the case and it was really all just wishful thinking in the end. We feel bad that the guy in the tiger mascot is going to have to keep coming out when there’s nothing for him to celebrate on the other side.

What did you think about this week’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver episode, and the end results of the segment?
