‘Shiptober: The value of Supercorp on Supergirl season 3
Last season, the emergence of this pairing within the fan community was one of the surprises of the season. While we assumed Lena Luthor would be a great character, who knew that there would be so much chemistry between her and Kara Danvers? Or, who knew that there would be so many opportunities for the two to work together — even without Lena knowing the truth about Kara’s alter ego?
The Supercorp ‘ship is a fun one to discuss because even though the romantic aspect of it may not be canon on the show itself as of this time, it’s value still is immeasurable. While the writers may not necessarily be crafting their stories with this ‘ship in mind, you can see little moments and also storylines that seem to be born out of the popularity of these two characters together. Showrunners, by and large, do want to make their fans happy in some way — even if it means slipping little references or moments here and there between characters. We’ve certainly seen this in the past with Dean and Castiel on Supernatural just as we’re absolutely seeing it with Kara and Lena here.
With that being said, we haven’t seen anything here at CarterMatt as overt so far in season 3 as this notable Supercorp scene from season 2 when Supergirl — which literally took the phrase “Supercorp rising” to new levels. They did have a number of great scenes within 3×02, and we do think that there are going to be more of those where that came from in the future.
Without getting too much into things from a romantic point of view now, let’s focus more on things from a friendship side. What makes these two so strong and fun to watch? Much of that seems to stem from how they’re willing to often put everything to the side to focus on each other. Even though Lena is a super-powerful CEO and Kara is a reporter/superhero, they often do figure out ways to spend time together and support each other. They treat one another like equals and there is a lightness and sense of fun here that you don’t often get with other relationships on this show. (Of course, Kara struggled to make time for Lena and her requests as a boss this past week, but she apologized to her and vowed to be better. That’s another thing — when they have disagreements, they handle them like adults.)
In this modern age of television where there are so many characters lacking of depth across the board, there’s something appealing about watching too people who are multi-dimensional, there for each other, and can tackle things both separate and apart. There’s probably also a little bit of the beating-the-odds factor with these two that makes them so popular. We don’t want to go so far as to say that Supercorp is Romeo & Juliet (we don’t hope for that sort of ending for them), but there’s something appealing about someone from the House of El and someone from the House of Luthor being close. They’re changing history between these families and changing it up in the way that they best see fit. If you want to see them as romantic, wonderful! If you see them as a great friendship, there’s a lot to love there. Supercorp can be appealing to more than one fan base for more than one reason.

Absolutely love Supercorp. Their adults acting like adults. Not pandering to the tweens, and dumbing dialog. It seems real.
