Mindhunter: what could the crime series deliver in season 2?
As we mentioned in our review of Season 1, Jonathan Groff’s Special Agent Holden Ford was having a breakdown as the camera went to black in the finale. For Season 2, we hope that the writers expand on this or, at least, show how it has affected Holden and the study he is conducting with Special Agent Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) and Dr. Wendy Carr (Anna Torv). The second season can also continue to show how Tench and Wendy are dealing with the affects of their study. Fans saw Tench recognize that the job was getting to him and Wendy has always maintained that rational state of mind, choosing to not get too close and personal with the monsters they study. Consequences like these are expected of people who study killers for a living and it’s a fantastic way to keep the audience binge-watching the series.
Another concept we’d like to see in Season 2 would be more of the characters’ personal lives. We learned that Tench and his wife were having difficulties connecting fully with their son, Brian, and how despite not talking, Brian wants to spend time with his father by using his actions. It would be great to see how Tench will go about incorporating this into his life. Tench’s character suggest that we will do anything for Brian and now that he knows he wants to spend more time with Tench, it will be fascinating to see how he will juggle that while still conducting the study.
Finally, for Season 2 we hope that we will be officially introduced to the killer that consumed John E. Douglas’s life, the BTK killer. As mentioned in our review, Holden is based on Douglas and in his memoir the series is based on, Douglas tells the audience that he chased the BTK killer for decades.
If fans will recall, many of the pre-credit scenes consisted of an ADT technician who spoke to co-workers about tape refills, spoke to a customer about an order, and mailed a letter. Not exactly entertaining stuff. But what fans don’t realize is that the series was introducing you to who we believe is Dennis Rader aka the BTK killer (bind, torture, kill)m who was developing his skill set.
So going into Season 2, it will be interesting to see if the BTK killer has perfected his skill set or whether he is still working on it. Either way, the writers are setting up a decades long showdown between the man who basically developed criminal psychology and criminal profiling and one of the most famous serial killers of all time. Having this story slowly but effectively integrated into the series is a fantastic way to keeping bring the audience back. We are all so curious about this man already, and he hasn’t done much yet; time will only tell how amazing and fascinating this show is going to get, especially as group’s study gets more developed.
