‘Shiptober: Grey’s Anatomy season 14, Merthan (Nathan / Meredith), and the future

Merthan

Mrs. Carter: Are you ready to have a discussion on Grey’s Anatomy and Meredith and Nathan, otherwise known as Merthan?

We’ve taken on a number of different show relationships during our ongoing CarterMatt ‘Shiptober series so far this month, the one between Merthan remains one of the most interesting for a few different reasons. For one, it’s clear that the two parties care about each other, but there still is this fear and this lack of willingness to act on some of the feelings that they have. It’s in part guilt, it’s in part living in the past, and it’s also in part this desire to project the image that you want to project.

For Meredith, she’s certainly doing her fair share of projection, and a big part of that revolves around her trying to imagine how she would be if she was in Riggs’ shoes and her great love from her past came back. If Derek was there, she would like to imagine that she would forget all about Riggs and run right back to him. In part, she expects him to do the same with Megan … even though he is clearly struggling with that. Every person is different and feelings don’t just go away immediately. Even if Riggs would, hypothetically, love to move forward with his life, that doesn’t mean that it’s all that easy for him. What happened in the present is still the present, and eventually he will need to realize that.

One of the things that we would like to see in this relationship now as we move forward into the season is some more cognizance that it’s okay to feel some different things. For example, it’s okay for Riggs to have love for multiple people at the same time and for that love to mean different things. Meanwhile, it’s also perfectly okay for him to struggle with that and for him to need time to figure things out. For Meredith, she has to realize that it’s okay if Riggs does still have feelings for her — she cannot make the two of them be together because it’s the right thing, and she may even feel guilty about that after the fact. All of these ideas, in one way or another, will be interesting for this show to explore as we progress along deeper into season 14.

We don’t expect there to be any sort of immediate resolution to the Meredith / Riggs / Megan situation (we wouldn’t call it a love triangle), but we also don’t expect this to go on forever. Thanks to Timeless, there is really only so long that Abigail Spencer will be around.
