Nancy Drew: NBC to develop new TV adaptation
According to Variety, the new series will be based on the famous novels focused on the aforementioned character. The series will be lead by executive producers Tony Phelan, Joan Rater, and Dan Jinks. Here are a few more details on the series itself:
“The new series follows the author of the most famous female teen detective book series who is thrust into a real-life murder mystery. In need of help, she turns to her two best friends from childhood, who were the inspiration for all those books, and the women who have a real axe to grind about the way their supposed best friend chose to portray them all those years ago.”
This is going to be an interesting take on the well-known novel and a different version of the series that CBS tried to develop in the past. In the CBS version, Nancy Drew would have been an adult working for the NYPD as a detective solving crimes throughout the city. However, the project never went past the development stages. A pilot was filmed with Sarah Shahi, who is not involved with the NBC version.
While NBC has made plans to air their version, it will be interesting to see who joins the project. They could decide to bring on down the road Shahi because she is already familiar with the role or they could bring on someone entirely different. Obviously, Shahi wouldn’t play the same role, however, she knowledge of the concept could prove compelling enough to sign her on for the NBC version. On the other hand, a new actress would make the series separate from the CBS one. We have been comparing the two throughout this article, even though they went in different directions, and by having a different actress it would help to make them stand apart.
The NBC version is also intriguing because it will focus on the author, not the character. It’s an interesting twist and one that we believe makes it more appealing. Most of us grew up knowing Nancy Drew and knowing her story, but many of us have no background knowledge of her creator. So we suspect this new series will give us more information about the author’s background and possibly how they came up with the concept.
Either way, we can’t wait to see what other information NBC will give us about the upcoming series.
