This Is Us season 2 episode 4 shocker: What happened with Kate?
In the closing minutes, Kate learns that not only is she expecting a child, but that she is six weeks along. Maybe this is a twist that is going to surprise some people, but we know that some others predicted it. It puts her in a position where she has to focus on her health more than ever, and it may be a driving force in all aspects of her life. Sure, she has been able to be selfless at some various points in her life but now is the time more than ever that she has to do that. She will need to move forward, gather information, and try to figure out to clue in others to what is going on with her.
This Is Us is a show that does like to have themes to many of their episodes, and parenting was a big part of this one even more so than others. After all, Randall and Beth were doing their best to readjust to their role as caretakers, and realized in the process how there are many different ways to get through to people. What worked for their biological children may not work for others. Meanwhile, with Kevin we saw him retracing memories of his father as he struggled through his recovery, and his reliance on medical to battle through the pain does make us concerned. (Remember that Jack had his own history of addiction.)
In the past, one of the big stories for Rebecca was her trying to come to terms with why her mother didn’t treat Randall the same as Kate or Kevin. They were the Big Three and not the Big Two, but she treated Randall like was lower on the food chain. Was it racism, was it the adoption, or was it something else entirely? We explored much of that and kudos to the writers for not painting the character with just one brush. Also, kudos for the touching scene at the end of the episode where we saw Rebecca’s mother doing her best to relate to Randall — the two characters may not have that much in common, but she still was trying. Sometimes putting forth that effort matters more so than anything else that you can do. It’s recognized and appreciated as everyone does their best to actually move forward.
