Al Michaels apologizes for Harvey Weinstein – Sunday Night Football comment

Al Michaels

Typically on Sunday Night Football we tend to see a lot of controversy these days, with most of it being about the players. Not so much Sunday.

During the broadcast between the New York Giants and Denver Broncos play-by-play announced Al Michaels proclaimed that the “Giants are coming off a worse week than Harvey Weinstein” when talking about some of their recent play and off-the-field headlines. Suffice it to say, the majority of the people on social media were not altogether happy with it. Michaels came under heavy fire for his comments and how he chose to make light of Weinstein and many of the accusations that are out there about him. Remember, this is a man who is at the center of a horrifying sexual assault scandal, one that was going on for years but covered up by many people afraid of losing their place within the Hollywood power player’s organization.

It wasn’t too long at all following the initial comment being made that Weinstein then issued an apology — our guess is that someone working on the broadcast saw him trending on Twitter and that everything spiraled downward from there. You can see both the video and the apology below, and we have to say this: If you are going to make an apology, shouldn’t you at least try to actually address what you’re apologizing for? Obviously context makes this clear, but at the same time this is probably about as weak of a statement as you’re probably going to find given that he really just seems eager to move on with whatever is next on the show rather than focusing on that.

This is the second time this weekend that a public figure apologized for some of their comments about Weinstein. James Corden recently issued an apology of his own over jokes that he made at Weinstein’s expense at a gala that made light of the situation. This is a situation that is incredibly difficult to joke about, which is why there is an odd paradox in how some late-night hosts have come under fire for not talking about this. The only thing you can really do is condemn his actions. They’re unspeakable.

What do you think about both the statement that Michaels made during the broadcast and then the apology that came in after the fact? Share below.
