Madam Secretary season 4 episode 2 video: Elizabeth’s catch-22
This time around, this bind has to do with the current Civil War threat that is breaking out in Libya, a country that Tea Leoni’s character felt was finding its footing. The problems in the country are heating up such a way that peace could prove difficult, and in order to shore things up it could take a helping hand in the form of federal aid.
Unfortunately it’s not entirely clear that this said aid is coming. In the sneak peek below you can see President Dalton serve as the bearer of bad news here, given that he tells Elizabeth that Congress is looking to strip the foreign aid and hand it over to farm subsidies instead. Taking care of domestic problems rather than international issues is a common strategy by many in Congress, but this is a situation that is a little more tense than most. If you choose to continue to give aid you run a greater risk that said aid could fall into the wrong hands. In turn, you could be screwing over new generations of people past and present.
However, if you choose to not give any aid you could screw over the entire country, allow war to fester, and allow for many lives to be lost and for Libya to turn into a hotbed for terrorists and seedy government-types who could ruin relations with much of the surrounding world. You need to make the right move in this situation, and you also need to make it in the right way with the right incentives in mind. This is not the easiest one to navigate, but Elizabeth at this point has been Secretary of State for a while now. She understands the delicacy of this situation and will likely know what needs to be done to ease off tensions. Her problem remains just finding a way to get people to listen since in Congress there are constantly rooms of people who think that they, individually, are smarter than everyone else and will do virtually anything that they can in order to better reinforce this belief system. It’s the sort of world that we live in when it comes to Congress and it is therefore one that Elizabeth also has to be used to by now.
