‘Shiptober: The appeal of McDanno on Hawaii Five-0

McDanno

Mrs. Carter: The McDanno ‘ship is finally now self-aware!

Last night on Hawaii Five-0 season 8 the show made easily its most overt nod yet to the popular internet pairing of Steve McGarrett and Danny Williams, putting the two of them onto a t-shirt together for McDanno’s Bar & Grill. This probably won’t end up being the name of the Italian restaurant that the two parties are trying to start up, but Kamekona’s idea is still hilarious and we feel like if Hawaii Five-0 and CBS turn it into actual t-shirts that it could make some serious money.

The McDanno ‘ship has been popular among some circles of the internet for a rather long time, and while we don’t think it’s set to become canon in the way that the t-shirt may suggest, there are many reasons why the support base for the two of them out there is so vast. It’s the subject in today’s edition of our ongoing ‘Shiptober series here at CarterMatt.

Much of it starts first and foremost with the chemistry. In order for any pairing to be popular you need to have likable people with a great onscreen relationship — Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan have that. Both guys seem to have fun with each other and have some of the show’s best seasons. Many of their arguments certainly give you an old-married-couple vibe; they’re constantly bickering and we’re constantly wondering if they’re ever going to just snap completely all over each other. Part of their appeal is almost in that they almost seem to enjoy squabbling with each other; it gives them something to do, and it’s a testament to their personalities as a pair of really strong-willed guys.

While the arguments are fun, the appeal also comes from how when the chips are down, they’ll do almost anything for each other. Remember, Danny gave up part of an organ in order to help McGarrett out. That moment with the transplant easily deepened their friendship and made them more connected than they’ve ever been in the past. That’s probably one of the reasons why they have this restaurant idea now — while many police partners in TV get along, you don’t see many of them willing to go into business with each other during the off hours. This brings it easily to another level.

Given everything that they’ve gone through and everything that they’re going to go through we don’t see the McDanno ‘ship dying down for a long time. The bromance here is fun, and the constant love-hate relationship (hate’s probably too strong of a word, but they may hate each other here and there since they’re that stubborn) is one of the reasons that people watch. We’re absolutely excited and then some to learn more about where this story is going to be going for the remainder of the season.
