Once Upon a Time season 7 spoilers: Is Roni really Regina?

On Once Upon a Time season 7 episode 2, there is a big surprise in that Captain Hook in Hyperion Heights actually wasn’t the same Hook as the one with Emma Swan back in Storybrooke. Instead, this was the Hook from the Wish-World, and Rogers proved to be very much his own man. Colin O’Donoghue effectively has now a new character — there are obviously many similarities between him and the previous pirate, but also key differences. He’s certainly not destined to have the same ending to his story.

Because of what we just learned, though, there is another very-fair question worth asking: Does learning this truth about Rogers alter whether or not any of the other returning favorites are who we think they are. Is Roni really Regina, or are we being tricked there in some sense? There’s nothing wrong with wondering the answer to that question, but executive producer Adam Horowitz seems to be doing his best to assure us that nothing is as we may think on this subject. Speaking per TVLine, the show’s executive producer had the following to say:

“Rogers is the only one we’ve done with this. By Episode 4, Weaver being Rumple and all that becomes clear — Regina/Roni and Weaver/Rumple are who they are — and you’re going to find out the whole Belle and Rumple story, as well.”

This ultimately makes some sense given mostly that with Hook, you had a defined happy ending back in Storybrooke with Emma and the show clearly doesn’t want to change that. With Emma pregnant clearly the two are ready to move forward into a different part of their lives. Meanwhile, with Rumple there is still some unfinished business that is out there. Maybe there always will be with him given that he is not a guy showing an immense capacity for being able to move forward. He shows a few elements of a man willing to change, and then he backpedals and becomes very much his old self once more. Whether or not he really changes is something that is going to have to be seen in order to believed. For the time being, he hasn’t really done a whole lot to earn our trust.
