Osric Chau returning to Supernatural season 13 as Kevin
According to a report coming in right now via Entertainment Weekly, Chau (who played the character primarily from season 7 until season 9) will be returning in the role of Kevin at some point this season. Given that he is technically dead, we figure that there is probably going to need to be some creativity here in seeing how he comes back onto the series. That’s something that executive producer Robert Singer notes to the website in speaking more about how Kevin is reintroduced into the world of the show:
“It’s a different Kevin … It’s Osric, but it’s different so we’re having a lot of fun playing with that.”
Meanwhile, fellow EP Andrew Dabb added the following:
“The triumphant return of Kevin will be really fun. We don’t want to make the alternate world an endless parade of [old characters], but it does present us with opportunities if we can find a new interpretation on a character we like — like Bobby Singer last year, like Kevin this year, like Michael. You don’t want to make it a gimmick, but you don’t want to totally ignore the opportunity, and I think we have an opportunity here, so we definitely are going to use it selectively.”
While with some shows we’re probably be a little bit frustrated that dead characters don’t ever seem to be gone completely, we do think that it somehow does work for Supernatural more often than it doesn’t. This is a show that really tries to embrace fun and have a good time with its characters, and many of them are tremendous sources for both humor and inventive storytelling. It’s really with all of this in mind that we’re very much stoked to see what the writers decide to do here. For our money here at CarterMatt, Chau can stick around however long he likes. It’s hard to turn down Kevin, no matter what form he takes.
