Saturday Night Live – Kumail Nanjiani promo: Someone gets a little lost

Kumail Nanjiani promo

There are few editions of Saturday Night Live we’ve been more excited to see over the years than the one featuring Kaumail Nanjiani. We’ve made it no secret that the star of Silicon Valley and The Big Sick is probably our favorite comedian in the business, and he’s also certainly made a name for himself as an actor over the past several years, as well.

As a matter of fact, we’ve probably never been more excited for a host in our years covering the show at CarterMatt.

As for how this weekend’s episode is going to go, there is a certain degree of uncertainty that goes along with that just because it’s still hard to tell how SNL is going to use Kumail. The Big Sick, while brilliant, may not be mainstream enough to center a full sketch or two around it — we also don’t quite know how you would spoof something that is so personal to him and his wife Emily V. Gordon. Meanwhile, Silicon Valley is already so silly and funny as it is. Our feeling is that you let Kumail shine during the monologue in the way many other great comedians do and just let him do some super-funny stuff along the way. Be creative, and let him take on timely, fascinating themes that you don’t always see on the show. He’s certainly shown a willingness on social media to discuss and take on current events.

Now, there’s one other subject that makes Kumail notable in that he continues an effort from SNL to find even more diverse voices. Last year, Aziz Ansari became the first host of South Asian heritage to take on the role as host; now, Kumail (who was born in Pakistan and moved to the United States at 18) is the second. Hopefully this is a trend that the show continues after more than four decades of frustrations when it comes to them ignoring certain demographics. Obviously Kumail hosting means so much more than just his background — he’s hilarious and deserving, as mentioned — but it’s still worth pointing out.

As for the Kumail Nanjiani promo…

This is pretty simple. He walks through the hallways of 30 Rock, seemingly lost as to where the SNL studio is before finding someone to help. There’s also a mini-monologue thrown in here about what happens when he accidentally is thrown into a Rachel Maddow taping, which doesn’t have a live audience, and he ended up laughing at all of the uncomfortable parts.

Are you anywhere near as excited for this weekend’s episode as we are?

Share some of your thoughts on that subject right now in the comments, and rest assured we will have some more news when it comes to SNL in due time.
