NCIS season 15, episode 5 review: McGee’s ‘Thug Life’ meme goes viral

McGee meme

The last episode of NCIS season 15 introduced us to Jack Sloane and so far we have to say that we really find her character exciting and a great mix to the cast. She’s smart, strong and there’s a mystery around those scars on her back that we want to know more about, because we know that there’s a pretty rough story that’s going to be attached to them. Also, we like the idea of there being someone that is unafraid of Gibbs and is going to give him a serious challenge – it’s something he needs. Maybe down the line this could turn romantic since there’s some nice chemistry between them, but for now we are invested in watching this working relationship develop.

A McGee meme

You have likely seen the meme going around online the past week of McGee’s amazing hair and a “Thug Life” quote under it and that has made it’s way onto the show tonight. It’s just as amazing on the show as it was on social media, especially Gibbs’ reaction to it being “the more you know, the weirder it gets”. At first it gets under McGee’s skin, but after seeing that it’s been shared over 100,000 times and that he’s starting to get a little internet fame from it, things don’t look as bad as they originally did – that is until he sees the meme shift into the same picture with the word “loser” across his head.

A meeting gone bad

Reeves is at an AA meeting and a woman he knows there (named Melissa) is being abused. She finally left her abuser, but outside the meeting she is kidnapped right in front of Reeves’ eyes and he feels responsible like he could’ve done more. Getting help from the team on Melissa’s disappearance unfortunately reveals to everyone that he’s in recovery. Not too surprisingly there’s a lot of support from the team. When he eventually finds her, she has killed her abuser and was cleared of any wrong doings, but since this is NCIS we know that this is not as simple as it looks. After Jack does some more research on the boyfriend, she learns that Melissa’s whole story is false and that it was a well thought out murder on her cheating boyfriend. It’s a hard reveal for Reeves, but this whole situation has made Reeves decide to open up at his AA meeting for the first time.

CarterMatt’s over all thoughts

It was nice to see Reeves getting some focus tonight, since we haven’t seen a lot of that this season so far, but more than that we liked getting more of his backstory (his battle with addiction and difficulty opening up about it at the meetings). This is something that many people out there struggle with, so seeing the support of the team behind him was inspiring. NCIS is one of the few series out there that highlights difficult subjects, but then also shows the after effects of them and different ways that people deal with them. It’s one of the many things we like about this show.
