Ransom season 2 renewal confirmed by CBS, Global; will air in 2018

How about this for surprising news on a Tuesday afternoon? After previously appearing dead and buried, there is a Ransom season 2 renewal, after all! The series starring Luke Roberts is going to be coming back in the new year, and on the two different platforms where it had the majority of its audience — Global in Canada and CBS in the United States.

While the ratings for the first season of Ransom on CBS were far from stellar, one of the biggest things aiding the show stateside is that they’re not the ones strictly footing the bill. It’s a property that is easier for them to air, especially if they keep it in the same Saturday timeslot as earlier this year. There aren’t expectations that are through the stratosphere and there are opportunities for it to find a way to succeed.

In a statement confirming the news about the renewal, Lisa Godfrey, Vice President of Original Content for Corus Entertainment (the parent company of Global) had the following to say:

“We are proud to team up again with our broadcast and production partners to deliver a second season of this powerful, original drama to audiences nationally and internationally … The first season of Ransom brought intense, high-octane action coupled with compelling storytelling, and we can’t wait to see where the series takes us in Season 2.”

Meanwhile, John Morayniss, Co-President of Film, Television and Digital for the studio eOne, offered up the following:

“We are thrilled to start Season 2 of this character driven crime drama with the team at Global. This season promises bigger stakes for the elite negotiating squad as they continue to travel the globe taking on even more dangerous cases.”

Season will be filming in Hungary, a place that is very much off the beaten path for most American productions. The closest thing to this in proximity is probably the Stana Katic-led Sony series Absentia, which has not had an official network home named publicly yet. (There is a broadcaster who is set to air the show, and an announcement is forthcoming in the weeks ahead.)

Our thoughts on the Ransom season 2 renewal

It’s great, mostly because it is great anytime that we get a true underdog story like this. We would not have imagined getting a chance to see this renewal happen at this point a few months ago but it is very exciting to see it.
