Ink Master: Angels preview: Deanna Smith, Ejay Bernal, Dominique Ransom face off

Deanna Smith

Tonight on Ink Master: Angels episode 2, you will get a chance to see Deanna Smith, Ejay Bernal, and Dominique Ransom all battle to represent the best tattoo artist that Dallas has to offer. It’s another new setting, and with that there are going to be some new challenges.

So who are these three artists? Learning about them is a good jumping-off point for everything that could transpire over the course of the episode.

Dominique Ransom – She is the first artist you meet during the episode. Despite tattooing for just a few years she has figured out for herself already a signature style — she likes doing tattoos that she describes as bright and “girly” with a ton of color thrown in there.

Deanna Smith – She’s also only been tattooing for just a few years, and has a style that couldn’t be more different than some of the work Dominique loves to do. Her focus is more on realism.

Ejay Bernal – Of the three artists taking part in this episode Ejay by far has the most experience. He’s been doing this for a good eight years, and he can do a wide array of different tattoos. With that said, one of his specialties is doing work in black and gray.

These three are going to be put to work right away in trying to create a stellar tattoo located in a difficult part of the body: The foot. The rules here are effectively the same otherwise as last week — the artists can do whatever they want, and this tattoo should show off the sort of style and ability they want to be known for. (You can watch a preview of the challenge over here.) Two of these artists will move forward and face off against each other; the winner there will battle one of the Angels for a chance to compete in Ink Master season 10, which will premiere at some point in the new year.

Judging from what we’ve seen of this first challenge here at CarterMatt, Deanna seems to be the artist poised to do the best in the episode. While she doesn’t have the most original creation in the world in a rose, she executes it very well and has some really solid line-work in there. On the flip side Ejay and Dominique are much more creative, but their tattoos have a few more issues to be worked out when it comes to having clear lines and proper shading. The color work on Deanna’s is a clear sign that she had to rush near the end; meanwhile, it’s a little harder to read precisely what is going on with Jay’s tattoo as opposed to some of the others.
