‘Shiptober: Where will Poldark season 4 bring Ross and Demelza?

Ross and Demelza

Mrs. Carter: What’s coming next in terms of the Ross and Demelza relationship moving into Poldark season 4?

When the third season ended on the BBC earlier this year, there was (spoiler alert) major trouble afoot for Aidan Turner and Eleanor Tomlinson’s characters. The two parties ended the most-recent season of the show still together, but barely. Demelza had chosen to be with Hugh Armitage in some capacity, whereas Ross chose to remain clammed up over the true interaction of his conversation with Elizabeth. He knows that he doesn’t love his old flame much like he once did, and that Demelza is the woman he cares about more than anyone else in the world. Yet, why isn’t he actually saying this? How difficult is it for him to say some of these words? We’ve gotten a sense that pride may be getting in the way, or his frustrations that Demelza doesn’t give in to some of his ideas and actions as much as he would like.

Should he know by now that Demelza often knows best, given that she is the one who pushed for him to run for office? Probably so, but more than likely you’ve learned by now that Ross is the stubborn sort. He often doesn’t do what he should even when a good idea is staring him in the face.

In this edition of our month-long CarterMatt ‘Shiptober series, one of the things that we want to look at now is how to make these two characters and their relationship stronger moving into season 4.

1. Trust – This is obviously the biggest one, given that it is something that the two of them have lacked here and there. Ross needs to not only be truthful to her, but also be truthful in his intentions to her. Don’t tell her that you’re going to do something and have it be for a different reason than specified. Even if you don’t intend to play games, make a concentrated effort to ensure that you’re not. Try to find a way to move forward in a happier place than before.

2. Care – This, for Ross, is one of the biggest issues — he just doesn’t give his wife much of a reason to think that he loves her, whereas Hugh has shown that he’s willing to do almost anything for her. Ross and Demelza once had a great passion, but it has since been weathered over time. He’s not expressing a significant amount of devotion to her, which in turn is causing her to not show a significant amount of devotion towards him. This is a pretty vicious circle that the two are in — they’re not able to provide for each other because they don’t know where to start. Demelza may need to cater more to Ross’ personal needs, but it’s hard to find the proper headspace to begin with that.

3. A little more stability – Having Ross frequently debate about leaving for various missions — and then actually doing so every now and then — makes matters fairly difficult for the two character. It’s hard to feel comfortable in a relationship when things are changing as often as they are! This is something that is going to need to be looked at over season 4 if the two are to improve.

Do you think that Ross and Demelza are going to be in a better place moving into Poldark season 4?
