Outlander season 4 filming underway; who did Sam Heughan meet?

Outlander season 4 filming

We’ve teased for some time that Outlander season 4 filming was on the cusp of kicking off. Now, the great news is finally official!

Monday marked the first day of official production for the upcoming batch of episodes in Scotland, with this coming following the table read that happened on this past Friday. There were multiple confirmations of this glorious news across social media, but one of our personal favorite reveals came via Jamie Fraser himself in Sam Heughan. In a new post on Twitter (see below), the actor confirmed that he has now met Rollo! There are two dogs who were cast to play the all-important canine companion earlier this year, and Rollo will play a key part in the story of season 4. This latest batch of episodes is based on the Diana Gabaldon novel Drums of Autumn and will continue the Outlander flair of bringing something very different to the table every season. The first season was very much about the introduction to the world in 18th-century Scotland, whereas the story of season two brought us through the political and hyper-intense world of France during the time of the Jacobite Rebellion. Season three gave us parallel lives and two different time periods for the first five episodes, and it will be giving us a voyage before long to a very different part of the world. It’s the most expansive season so far in terms of its ambition and everything that it is trying to execute.

Season 4, meanwhile, will be very much set within that world. Scotland will be a substitute for North Carolina as the flavor of the show changes once more and we see new characters and even old ones return in some surprising ways. If you’re not a book reader we don’t want to spoil too much about Roger and Brianna, but we’ll just go ahead and say that they’ve got a more important role this time around than ever before.

Production on season 4 is going to continue from now until presumably the spring or summer, depending on what locations need to be visited and whatever the production breaks are in between. As we’ve reported in the past, one of the reasons for filming starting off when it is this season is to give the show a reasonable shot at premiering in the fall of 2018. We know that there are many people, including executive producer Ronald D. Moore, who would like to see that happen. Based on the ratings records being set at the moment we also do think that there’s plenty good reason for Starz to try to keep the show at this time. (Remember, we’ll be back on either Tuesday or Wednesday with the latest ratings update.)
