Shark Tank exclusive: Kevin O’Leary on anticipating other Sharks, best pitches

Kevin O'Leary

Tonight, Shark Tank will air its third episode of season 9, and when it comes Mr. Wonderful himself in Kevin O’Leary, this is the first time we’ve had a chance to see him on the show this fall.

As reported last week, O’Leary will be featured a little less this season than in past seasons and this is due mostly to his recent Conservative Party leadership campaign in Canada. Commitments to that campaign kept him from appearing in some select episodes, but he was able to come in and film a good many once the campaign ended. He will be the same Shark you remember, notorious for truth-telling and giving people tough love when they need it. Hopefully we will also get to hear some of his signature catch-phrases, including “all roads lead to Mr. Wonderful” when he remains the last Shark standing during negotiations.

Leading up to O’Leary’s return tonight we asked him a couple of brief questions while we were at the Shark Tank season 9 premiere event in Beverly Hills. Read what he has to say about anticipating his fellow Sharks and also what an entrepreneur needs to do in order to get his attention.

CarterMatt – Now that you have been doing this for a while, do you think you’re able to anticipate what some of the other Sharks are going to do?

Kevin O’Leary – I generally know before they say a word what’s going to happen. I’ve seen thousands of pitches, so yes is the answer.

What to you constitutes the perfect pitch?

Explain your idea in sixty seconds or less, that way I know what the hell it is.

No dancing around. That’s it.

If they can do that, and then if they can show that they can execute the plan and know their numbers, there’s a high probability I’ll write them a check.

The proof is in the pudding when it comes to O’Leary’s success as a Shark Tank investor. He’s made tremendous profits with many of his wedding / celebration-themed investments including Wicked Good Cupcakes, Bottle Breacher, and Honeyfund; recently, Plated was bought out for a massive sum of money. He excels at finding his investments smart, strategic partnerships that help make everyone the most money possible. He may be one of the more intimidating Sharks to see in the Tank, but after the fact the results speak for themselves if you end up getting a deal with him.
