The Walking Dead – Fear the Walking Dead crossover is happening — and it’s okay
AMC confirmed this weekend (while at New York Comic-Con) that this enormous crossover is going to be happening; not only that, but we even have a little bit more information about how it’s going to come together. Speaking (per TVLine), comic creator Robert Kirkman had the following to say:
“We want these shows to have their own legs, tell their own stories and be their own thing. I think we’ve finally gotten to a place with Fear the Walking Dead where it has its own identity [and] we can play with some things.
“There is one character that is going to go from one show, that I will not name, to another show, that I will not name. Now, what does that mean? Because these timelines, like… how does that work? Are we going to see an interesting backstory of a Walking Dead character in Fear the Walking Dead? Or are we going to see a Fear the Walking Dead character show up in The Walking Dead and show a future version of the character?”
There are obviously some things that will need to be worked out if the crossover is going to be as great as it can be — mostly notably, they will have to figure out a way in which a story can be told that will make sense for both shows. From our vantage point we do think that having a Walking Dead character on Fear the Walking Dead makes the most sense just because there’s a definite end to it where they go and join the other world again. If you bring someone from Fear the Walking Dead onto the other show it’s hard to get them back since at present Walking Dead seems to be ahead in the timeline, especially if they do just forward at some point this season.
Can everyone just give it a chance already?
If you look at the replies to the AMC tweet a good two-thirds of them are people complaining because they don’t like Fear the Walking Dead, even though season 3 of it is arguably (at least per us at CarterMatt) the best season of either show since maybe The Walking Dead season 4 or 5. It took a while to get going, but it’s finally discovered much of its true potential with characters like Troy Otto adding some much-needed spice to some of the proceedings.
Also, if the show does what we’re suggesting clearly The Walking Dead fans won’t see their show impacted at all — this is just a way to get more fans of the original show watching the spin-off/companion/whatever you want to call it. Given how good Fear the Walking Dead is right now – we think that’s a good thing.
Do you think that The Walking Dead – Fear the Walking Dead crossover could be as great as we think it will be?
