Can we think about an X-Files season 12 renewal already?
Of course, as of this writing we’re of two minds. The first thing we should note, as a reminder, is that season 11 is currently being filmed in Vancouver. It’s not on the air yet, and it’s probably not going to be on the air until either January or February. It’s much too early for Fox to actually render a judgment on the show’s future; as a matter of fact, for the eleventh season they didn’t even officially announce a renewal until more than a year after the six-episode season 10 “revival” aired. Clearly, they’re not in any hurry to bring more of the show out there to the public, and nor should they be. You don’t want to milk too much of a good thing.
Now that we’ve said that, should the performance of Fox so far this year cause them to be thinking already about a season 10? Probably, given that even if the show draws around 75% of the ratings that it did the first go-around it’s still better than the vast majority of what they put on the air so far this fall. You’ve got shows like Lucifer, Gotham, and The Orville that are hovering around a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic, and the struggle for their comedies to find a large audience very much still remains there. This is a network that really needs a consistent breakout hit, and that’s not really Empire anymore.
What we at CarterMatt wonder about for Fox is this: Do they try to make The X-Files an annual thing after this season to boost up ratings? We have to think it’d be considered if none of their new programs stick — though this does bring us back to a point we made just over a paragraph ago: You don’t want to milk too much of a good thing. The ratings for season 10 were in part great because viewers were able to have the feeling that this was something special. If you bring it back for more episodes too quickly you run the risk of this feeling dissipating and the show not feeling anywhere near as much of an event as it once was.
Do you think Fox should be thinking about an X-Files season 12?
