Grey’s Anatomy firefighter series adds The Catch alum Jay Hayden
According to a report coming in right now via Deadline, the former The Catch actor is saying within the Shondaland family as (go figure) a firefighter named Travis. He joins a cast that includes The Flash actor Grey Damon, Rosewood star Jaina Lee Ortiz, and current Grey’s Anatomy actor Jason George, who will be bringing his character of Ben Warren over to this show.
The Grey’s Anatomy firefighter series is going to be launched in some form a little bit later this fall on the flagship show, with the goal here of launching the ten-episode show at midseason. Our sentiment is that it could either premiere following the end of How to Get Away with Murder or Scandal — one way or another, ABC is probably going to want to use the flagship show as a lead-in to help this one out. Grey’s executive producer Stacy McKee is set to be the showrunner here, and given she knows the flagship very well she should be able to bring some of what makes it so great over to this show, as well.
We’re certainly excited about this series, but the real challenge is going to be finding some things to do here that we don’t see already on Chicago Fire. If the shows had very different tones we figure that would be more challenge, but when you think about it Chicago Fire, much like Grey’s Anatomy, mixes a metaphorical family component into stories that have a lot of humor but also heavy drama in them. It’s not a super-dark show, though it has the capacity to go there occasionally.
We do still think that this firefighter series should be at least a relative success just because of the legacy of the original show. Plus, ABC does still need some more hits. They have found one seemingly in The Good Doctor, but that’s only filling one hole on a schedule that is becoming the ratings version of Swiss cheese. If the network finds a way to make this show work they can shore up #TGIT even after Scandal departs. That takes care of one issue, and then they just have to move on to some other ones.
