This Is Us season 2 ratings fall; The Mayor OK; NCIS: New Orleans steady

How were the This Is Us season 2 ratings on Tuesday? The good news for NBC was that they were still dominant. However, we’re not going to say they were as dominant as they were for the premiere.

Last night’s new episode generated in total a 3.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is down a good 20% from the premiere; yet, NBC noted this morning that this is still the highest-rated non-premiere/finale episode ever for the show. We do think the ratings will remain strong throughout this year, but we wouldn’t be shocked if we start to see them tumble. That happens with many network shows given that there’s no real end date in mind and many fickle viewers tend to gravitate towards whatever is new and cool at any given time.

We’ll see what happens with This Is Us moving forward but we definitely are starting to think that the network made a mistake with moving Chicago Fire to Thursday night. (We’ll have more on that shortly.) The second episode of Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders drew just a 1.2 rating — while decent for 10:00 p.m. Eastern in general, it’s both a drop from the premiere and it’s losing a huge chunk of its lead-in.

As for some other highlights/lowlights on the day.

Highs and lows for CBS

While both NCIS (1.4) and Bull (1.2) were down slightly in the demo, these two shows and NCIS: New Orleans all actually gained viewers week to week following their premieres. Meanwhile, the latter show was steady in the demo for the most part — consider that CBS does have one of the most loyal followings out there for some of its crime shows.

Will these shows prove to be steady the rest of the year? Time will tell.

How about The Mayor?

With a 1.2 rating to start things off, the new ABC comedy did okay — however, we hope more people discover this show given that it’s one of the best this season. It’s such a fun, innovative idea watching a young rapper run for Mayor and get it — mostly just because he wanted publicity. Now he’s gotta figure out what to do with the power.

Also, we should note that Kevin (Probably) Saves the World started with a 1.0 rating — that’s not terrible for ABC at this timeslot provided that it keeps all of the rating. We’re just not all that confident that it will even if we think that it’s a pretty good show and Jason Ritter deserves a full-time gig that actually sticks around for him for a long time.
